  • I'm an abuser. That's all there is to it. When I finally realized it, I decided to put her up for adoption.

I couldn't afford cab fare. The final afternoon I spent with her we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge up the length of Manhattan and dropped her off where I was sure she would be safe. They told me they would call if they needed more information or if she was in any danger. I left the building with tears in my eyes and made the usual excuses in my head for turning her over. I beat her, I wasn't home enough to care for her. I was single and my ex was unreliable. . . I went to the park and bought a dime bag. I smoked the whole thing.

They never called and I assumed she was fine. I assured myself she was in a better environment then the one I could provide. Maybe they had found her a new home? I waited. Then I couldn't wait anymore. I called to check in. The professional voice on the other end informed me that they only keep strays for two weeks. If no one claimed them or they weren't adopted they were put to sleep.

  • Ouch. I'm a poet, my first visit to a flash site, just looking. Nice work, well-framed, good tone and detail, all fits. No nits.

  • Great prompt! I'm definitely going to try this!
