Prompts & Short-Form Writing

Instructor: Meg Pokrass

The short form: Flash, prose poetry, and micro fiction (LET'S CALL IT "SHORT FORM") have come of age. This eight-week workshop will provide a venue for both writers new to the art and those practiced in it to build their creative momentum. This cutting-edge workshop will emphasize prompts: Pokrass will provide unusual and creative starts that will help you experiment with short-form writing and learn to approach it from new ways.

Flash Fiction

Instructor: Robert Lopez

There is no one way to write compelling flash fiction, just as there are no formulas or tricks to help a writer to do so. A flash fiction can be realistic or surreal or realistic and surreal. Language is always of paramount concern, particularly in this very short form. So, we will pay close attention to syntax and diction. We will learn how to recognize lazy or bad writing, clich?, and shorthand, in each other's work and in our own. By the end of the term, we will all become better editors of our own work. We will examine and strive to make it new, make it yours. We will strive to risk it all on the page and we'll talk about what that means and what it doesn't. Finally, we will discuss all elements of craft, point of view, tense, as it applies. Our goal will be to produce several finished shorts over the course of the session.

About the Instructor:

Robert Lopez is the author of two novels, Part of the World and Kamby Bolongo Mean River, and a collection of short fiction, Asunder. He has taught at The New School, Pratt Institute, Columbia University, Pine Manor College's Solstice Low-Res MFA Program and was a 2010 Fellow in Fiction from the New York Foundation for the Arts.
