Anniver­sary

They walked along the esplanade, a gull as mas­cot, almost perched upon her shawl. She pointed the bar­rel of her umbrella at a far-off ship. A passerby remarked, “It’s like a lith­o­graph.” They fled the scene, pan­icked, as if pur­sued by the imag­i­nary artist seek­ing to etch them into stone.
